About the Client

FSD Africa Investments (FSDAi) is a specialist financial sector investor established by FSD Africa and the UK’s FCDO to strengthen and deepen Africa’s financial markets. We bridge critical funding gaps by investing patient, risk-bearing capital in novel financial instruments, facilities, and intermediaries. Our strategic investments take on early risk, test new models and catalyze capital from others to gradually transition the financial sector to finance Africa’s economic resilience and growth.

The Project

FSDAi required interim ESG investment support to ensure continuity during a transition period while the team reviewed its long-term ESG resourcing needs. The consultant was brought in to support ESG due diligence, portfolio monitoring, and framework development, helping FSDAi maintain investment quality and ESG compliance across its Africa-focused investment activities.

In delivering the work, the expert provided technical and operational ESG support across the investment process. This included:

Conducting early-stage ESG screening for pipeline transactions
Supporting detailed ESG due diligence for approved investments
Assessing environmental and social risks against IFC Performance Standards and relevant local regulations
Reviewing ESG management systems, governance structures, labor practices, community health and safety, climate and nature risks, gender and inclusion, and business integrity
Developing ESG action plans and supporting their integration into investment agreements
Tracking portfolio ESG action plans and supporting internal reporting on ESG performance and lessons learned
Contributing to the refinement of internal ESG tools, templates, and monitoring frameworks.
